On April 1, programming for the arts and culture events surrounding the 2015 PanAm/ Parapan American Games in Toronto were announced at the El Catrin restaurant in the Distillery District. PANAMANIA, the arts and culture festival, will include fine arts collaborations and commissions featuring theatre, photography, music, spoken word, fashion, visual arts and dance.
Dance events include presentations by Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS), Toronto’s Kaha:wi Dance Theatre and Kidd Pivot with Electric Company Theatre from Vancouver. NBS is presenting new work by choreographers Shaun Amyot and Demis Volpi – both alumni of the school – in a live-streamed dance event that includes thirty students from both NBS and from Pan Am countries.
Kaha:wi Dance Theatre is creating five interdependent dance works celebrating sports, including lacrosse and kayaking. Kidd Pivot’s artistic director, Crystal Pite, pairs with Electric Company Theatre’s Artistic Director Jonathon Young to create a hybrid of theatre and dance. “I’m excited to be working once more with Jonathon Young to create Betroffenheit [working title],” said Pite. “In many ways, it feels like this collaboration between the Electric Company Theatre and Kidd Pivot has been a long time in coming, and I’m looking forward to coming together to bring this new piece to the stage.”
Also part of the cultural festivities is former prima ballerina with the National Ballet of Canada, filmmaker, director and producer Veronica Tennant. Tennant will present Niágara, a theatrical piece inspired by the seminal poem by Cuban José María Heredia.
