The Show Choir Canada championships featured nearly thirty glee club teams from schools across North America. Over the weekend of April 12 – 13, show choirs took to the stage at the Toronto Centre for the Arts in spirited rounds of competition in three categories: Junior/Middle School, Nationals and Can-Am. Many of the 2014 competitors were vivacious, up-and-coming, “triple threat” performers, who were dazzling to watch on stage. Although they are still young, these entertainers already display professional dedication. When these artists take the stage their high energy is tempered with confidence and a strong belief in their team.
On Saturday morning, teams from Canadian junior and middle schools competed in an invitational round won by St. Peter Glee from St. Peter Elementary School in Milton, Ontario. Saturday afternoon featured high-school clubs as they competed for the title of National Champions. While Splash from Toronto’s Etobicoke School for the Arts (ESA) ultimately stole the show, winning the title, St. George’s School of Montréal staged a creative performance with G Major, which gained them the Best Dancer award and a well-deserved Spirit Award.
In the inaugural Can-Am Invitational round on Sunday, the top six teams from Saturday’s national competition took on two American powerhouse teams from Waltham High School in Massachusetts and Rich South High School in Illinois. ESA dominated the competition, taking the Grand Championship title and special awards for Best Choir and Best Combo. ESA also took home second place for their choir Glo, along with awards for Best Vocals, Best Show Design and Best New Choir.
A show choir competition of this kind illustrates the essential elements of live performance: teamwork, commitment, creativity, spirit and passion for the stage. The competition was a chance for performers to gain insight and constructive feedback from the panel of expert judges. As well, teams cheered each other on, building a supportive community. While the weekend belonged to all of the participants, there were many teachers, directors, parents and volunteers in attendance who had clearly devoted time to supporting these young students. In front of this strong support network, the enthusiasm, courage and talent of the performers also showcased the value of integrating arts education in school curricula.
