There are 26 main bones, 33 joints and over 100 muscles that move the bones in the foot. Two additional foot bones, the sesamoids, are as small as a Smartie and lie beneath the main joint of the big toe, “floating” within the tendon. They protect the tendon and increase its mechanical advantage in articulating the toe joint. Dancers can suffer from sesamoiditis, inflammation of the sesamoid bones.
