Choreographer and dancer Benoît Lachambre was awarded this year’s Grand Prix de la Danse de Montréal 2013 and the accompanying award of $50,000, the most generous in the world of dance, for his solo Snakeskins.
“Thank you to everyone who has put me to the challenge and continues to do so,” said the founder and artistic director of the company Par B.L.eux, visibly moved. “These exchanges with people and these experiences, both positive and negative, have made me who I am.”
Presented in October 2012 at the Usine C in Montréal, Snakeskins showcased the maturity and excellent control of the highly prolific Lachambre. His influence, reaching far beyond the borders of the province, speaks to the outstanding contribution of Montréal, dubbed “the capital of dance” by Prix de la Danse president and founder Marie Chouinard, to the international dance scene.
Also honoured was dancer-choreographer Daniel Léveillé, whose Solitudes Solo was awarded the Prix du CALQ (Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec) for the best choreographic work of the 2012/13 season.
“A choreography is literally built upon the dancers’ backs, their shoulders, abdominals, quadriceps, knees, and with their souls, moods, temperament, doubts, intelligence, courage, and generosity,” said Léveillé, who also could not conceal his emotion as he thanked the performers he worked with.
