Montréal’s Paul-André Fortier and Margie Gillis received their insignia as Officers of the Order of Canada on September 12, 2014. The ceremony, presided over by the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable David Johnston, awards outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Fortier, artistic director of Fortier Danse-Création, was recognized for his pioneering work in modern dance, for innovative choreography and for training young artists in Canada and abroad. Gillis, artistic director of Margie Gillis Dance Foundation, was recognized for her impressive body of work, performance and unique movement workshops. This is a promotion within the Order for Gillis who was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1987 and was the first modern dancer appointed to the Order.
Other recent appointments to the Order of Canada in dance include Miriam Adams of Dance Collection Danse and Nancy Kilgour of the School of Alberta Ballet.
