Paper Things, the Toronto gift and stationery store that has supported the National Ballet of Canada (NBoC) for more than fifty years will close its doors on June 30. The shop, a project of The Volunteer Committee of NBoC, has donated all proceeds to the NBoC since its opening in 1963 — more than $2 million. Genevieve McKillop, president of The Volunteer Committee, cites a decline in sales due to changing customs as the reason for closing Paper Things. “More and more, people are using the Internet for invitations, communications and salutations,” says McKillop. “What you may have written on a note is now being done through Facebook, email and Twitter.” Paper Things was featured in The Dance Current’s first ever Gift Guide in 2013, which presented sought-after items for the holiday season. The shop will be taking orders for personal stationery until April 30 and is asking customers to send in their orders as soon as possible.
When one door closes for the NBoC, another opens. The company’s educational program, YOU dance (Youth, Outreach and Understanding Dance), introduces dance to students in grades four to six through free workshops and performances. YOU dance has been very successful this month, with a live streaming of their April 16 performance at the Betty Oliphant Theatre in Toronto – a first for the program. Through the broadcast, the performance reached over 2000 students from over thirty-two schools across Ontario. Because of their success, two more YOU dance performances will be live streamed to schools on April 28 and May 2. Ontario schools are invited to sign up for the live stream on the YOU dance website.
