The Canadian Society for Dance Studies (CSDS/SCED) announced on June 3 in an email to its members that Lindsay Zier-Vogel will replace Samantha Mehra Donaldson as director. Zier-Vogel is a Toronto-based writer and arts educator who studied dance at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. She was involved with The Dance Current from 2002-2008 as a staff writer and advertising editor. Donaldson held the position of director for two years.
The CSDS/SCED is a group of artists and scholars practising and researching in the interdisciplinary field of dance, including dance theatre, history, anthropology, education, criticism and cultural studies. The group was founded by Amy Bowring in 2000 and remains Canada’s only academic association for dance. According to their website, the group “encourages and promotes research and writing in Canadian dance studies, and provides a forum for dance researchers to discuss their work with each other.”
The email also announced that dance artist and scholar Seika Boye will be serving as Interim President of the board of directors until the end of 2016. The group’s board includes faculty from across Canada, including York University in Toronto, Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Memorial University in St. John’s, Canada Council for the Arts, University of Toronto and Concordia University in Montréal.
The CSDS/SCED recently hosted Enhance Your Dance, a free talk-back series accompanying the Canada Dance Festival from June 5-9 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Members of the group interviewed artists before and after performances.
