Alberta Ballet removed one major hurdle for kids wanting to see The Nutcracker this season: the price of a ticket.
With Sun Life Financial, Alberta Ballet raised $30,000 to send 3000 kids to The Nutcracker over the holidays. Kids Up Front, an organization that provides children and teens with experiences, worked with the ballet to ensure deserving at-risk and underserved Albertans received the opportunity.
Alberta Ballet worked with Kids Up Front for the first time last year to facilitate the giving away of tickets to children in Calgary and Edmonton. This year marked the first time Sun Life Financial partnered as a sponsor to augment the Nutcracker Dream program.
This is becoming a regular initiative for the Calgary- and Edmonton-based company. In the fall, Alberta Ballet offered 100 tickets to veterans to see the Paul Taylor Dance Company while it was visiting from New York City. The connection was made because the mixed program included Company B, a work that incorporates the exuberance and hardship of the 1940s, all set to the music of The Andrews Sisters. Thirty veterans took the company up on the offer, according to the box office.
