Sondra McGregor is the brave new addition to our editorial team as copy editor for online and print. Sondra is a University of Toronto alumna and worked at the Victoria University Library, then as a copy editor for Maclean’s for eighteen years before assuming her current role as librarian at Canada’s National Ballet School. Dance has always been close to Sondra’s heart. When she was young she used to fall asleep to a vintage recording of Swan Lake, a classic she later saw at the Eaton Auditorium featuring National Ballet of Canada (NBoC) stars Lois Smith and Earl Kraul. “We went to many, many NBoC performances,” she recalls. “Tickets for rear orchestra seats at the O’Keefe Centre were only $12 — and it was the heyday of ballet of Nureyev and Baryshnikov. I love learning about the fascinating history of ballet, reading the great old books by Ivor Guest and Cyril Beaumont, but also the new. It would be remiss of me not to recommend one: Apollo’s Angels: A history of ballet (2007) by Jennifer Homans — a fabulous, definitive history of this most ethereal of art forms.”
