Editor’s note: the deadline has been extended to Sept. 30
The Dance Current is accepting pitches for the guest edited Winter 2023 issue. Send us your ideas for our first issue of 2023.
ISSUE THEME: Tradition In Our Times
We are thrilled to announce Swadhi Ranganee as the 2023 guest editor. Swadhi is an emerging artist who practices Sinhalese Kandyan and low-country traditional and folk dance with the aim of creating modern expressions for these forms while maintaining their aesthetic markers.
“Tradition In Our Times” focuses on the practice and development of traditional, ceremonial, ritual and folk dance forms in Canada.
“My hope is to create a space that supports and explores the work of artists who self-identify as traditional dancers or who otherwise have formative relationships with traditional dance forms.”
Ranganee
How, where, and why is traditional dance practiced in Canada? How do traditional dance practices relate to contemporary issues such as sustainability, reconciliation and landback initiatives, the anti-work movement, LGBTQ+ work, etc.? What professional challenges do these artists face? How are dancers confronting problematic or oppressive aspects of traditional cultures?
***Please feel free to pitch us an idea for a story, even if you’re not interested in being the one to write it. We still want to hear from you!***
Swadhi is looking for personal essays, feature stories, photo essays, poetry, profiles and tips. Email your ideas to swadhi@thedancecurrent.com by Sept. 30.
