Vivarium

By Brittany Duggan

Vivarium is an installation of dance, music and gardening. It guides visitors through a creative construction site, breathing life into neglected urban spaces.

Vivarium was created in 2014 by dancer-choreographer Lucy M. May in collaboration with dancer Paige Culley, scenographer Noémie Avidar and composer Patrick Conan, who all perform the piece.

“Past versions were done in Hochelaga neighbourhood in Montréal and in the Plateau,” says May. “We are hoping to tour the work next summer.”

May is a Montréal-based dance artist who recently returned to her roots in New Brunswick for a nomadic residency, which she describes as a performance practice contiguous with the land. “I spent four weeks this fall fleshing out a first phase, walking, playing, teaching, performing in the landscape. I’ll be back again in the spring for another eight weeks in Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John and Sackville.”
