Moscow Ballet: Swan Lake

By Julye Huggins

This Saturday in Medicine Hat, the Moscow Ballet presents the classic ballet Swan Lake. The company’s jam-packed Canadian tour continues this month in Saskatoon on November 9th and 10th, Edmonton on the 15th and 16th, Regina on the 11th and 12th, Calgary on the 22nd ad 23rd, Winnipeg on the 29th and finally, Thunder Bay on the 30th.The story tells of a group of young maidens trapped under an evil sorcerer’s spell, which transforms them into swans during the day. According to the company’s website, “In order to break the spell, a young man must swear undying love to the Swan Queen. If he is unfaithful, she, and the swan maidens, will be trapped forever.”The first incarnation of Swan Lake was performed by the Moscow Imperial Theater in 1877. Following many revisions, choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov received critical acclaim in 1894/95 for their rendition on the St. Petersburg Ballet.
