Amadeus – Dances with Wolfgang

By Ballet Victoria

Tucked away on Vancouver Island is Ballet Victoria, a small ballet company that continues to grow. Founded in 2002, Ballet Victoria has produced over fifty new works in its twelve years, employing ten dancers for mainstage productions each season, and supporting a touring program and various outreach programs. At the helm since 2007, Artistic Director and Choreographer Paul Destrooper is the company’s primary choreographer, having made over thirty works in Canada and the United States. Last year, Destrooper premiered his Amadeus and this year – with some further development – presents the work around the province, in Victoria, North Vancouver, Courtenay and Duncan. Amadeus refers to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the genius composer of the classical era. The ballet is predominantly set to Mozart’s Requiem, with a bit of rock music by Queen’s Freddie Mercury – drawing a parallel between the two musicians, their demons and the lifestyles that consumed each of them. Destrooper says, “The choreography comprises classical and contemporary ballet vocabulary as well as other genres including hip hop. The mix of styles and music may sound odd but works seamlessly because of the dramatic development. Creating a surprise is an interesting tool when creating a narrative ballet.”

Amadeus is first performed in Victoria, March 10-11. Learn more here
