Hauntings and Bleeding Hearts

Reflections on Kayoi Komachi/Komachi Visited and a crash course in Noh theatre By Heidi Specht

Kayoi Komachi/Komachi Visited is an ambitious new chamber opera that blends Japanese Noh theatre and western classical music. Produced by TomoeArts, the work is a collaboration between artists from Japan and Vancouver. The story combines two Noh plays about the renowned ninth-century Japanese poet Ono no Komachi, as well as five of her original poems.

Carrying a Collective Burden

Michael Greyeyes and Yvette Nolan’s Bearing By Emma Doran

Bearing is a dance opera co-created by Yvette Nolan, Michael Greyeyes and a cast of dancers, actors, singers and musicians, that will become a vital piece of Canadian theatre. Working with the idea that every Canadian has been in some way impacted by the disgraceful legacy of residential schools, the work is meant to encourage a collective carrying of the burden of this ugly and still present history. Bearing is a high concept work that offers a new model for catharsis via theatrical embodiment.

The Beginning of the End (and Why it Should Happen Again)

By Sky Fairchild-Waller Apocalypsis R. Murray Schafer

Welcome to the beginning of the end, also known as Apocalypsis, R. Murray Schafer’s two-hour oratorio chronicling the demise of the world and its laboured regenesis. The mood, more than fittingly, isn’t a light one; 1000 singers, musicians, and dancers gather to perform the opening and closing ceremonies of this Olympic-sized pageant of death and rebirth, and you made it into the theatre and to your seat, which was was no small feat.

A Canadian Experience from Paris to New York

By Mistaya Hemingway Les Boreades Édouard Lock

In March of last year, an operatic event in Paris sent shock waves through the international arts scene, but barely made a ripple in Canada. The production was so riotously received in Paris, that one evening the audience had to be reprimanded by the Maestro for their behaviour.
