The 16th Kalanidhi Festival of Indian Dance “Whirling Streams” production is dedicated to the late Sudha Khandwani Founder and Artistic Director who passed away last year, leaving an extraordinary history of International Indian Dance through her fifteen archived festivals (1993–2014).
The live and live-streamed Festival will present over 40 dancers from Canada and India and feature the classical and contemporary dance styles of Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak, Chhau, Kathakali and Modern over the course of six days. Performers include Menaka Thakkar Dance Collective (Toronto), Santosh Nair Sadhya Dance (India), Bhavajan Kumar Dancers (Toronto), Sinha Dance (Montreal), Deepti Gupta-Arzoo Dance Theatre (Ottawa), Aparna Sindhoor Navarasa Dance Theater (Los Angeles), and solos by Menaka Thakkar (Toronto), Kasturi Mishra (Ottawa), Sujata Mohapatra (India), Parul Gupta (Toronto), Riya Alika Mittal (Edmonton), Nivedha Ramalingham (Pickering), Preetisha Mohapatra (India), Eesha Pingale (India), Shobika Sivaruban (Toronto), Sonia St-Michel (Ottawa), Sweta Pararajasingam (Toronto) and more to be announced.
Join host Menaka Thakkar on Sunday, April 2, for a demonstration and symposium on the use of technology for teaching Indian dance online. Stick around for a one hour retrospective film on the history of contemporary Indian Dance seen through the eyes of past Kalanidhi Festivals. Plus, don’t miss a symposium discussion on Contemporary Indian Dance in India later in the afternoon. Admission is free for these Sunday events.
Tickets for live-streamed viewing are now available at kalanidhifinearts.org. For tickets to the performances visit harbourfrontcentre.com.
