Poetry in Motion

By Nicole Hamilton

BRODSKY / BARYSHNIKOV, presented solely in Russian, began with the faint playing of music and had an almost haunting air as Baryshnikov entered the stage through a large gazebo set piece. His presence, although strong, was beautifully presented as a man seemingly pensive, withered and engrossed in contemplation as he quietly whispered to himself while carrying his briefcase.

Baryshnikov's Ties to Canada

Famed Soviet-American dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov will make a rare return to Toronto to perform in the Canadian premiere of BRODSKY / BARYSHNIKOV. The Dance Current asked Baryshnikov about his time in Canada and he responded by highlighting his relationships within the ballet community.

Carrying a Collective Burden

Michael Greyeyes and Yvette Nolan’s Bearing By Emma Doran

Bearing is a dance opera co-created by Yvette Nolan, Michael Greyeyes and a cast of dancers, actors, singers and musicians, that will become a vital piece of Canadian theatre. Working with the idea that every Canadian has been in some way impacted by the disgraceful legacy of residential schools, the work is meant to encourage a collective carrying of the burden of this ugly and still present history. Bearing is a high concept work that offers a new model for catharsis via theatrical embodiment.

Dance at Toronto’s Luminato Festival 2016

By Miya Shaffer

Of the dance I saw, both A Study on Effort and a performance by Yes Yes Y’all demonstrated a sense of adventure while keeping to Luminato’s larger, and founding, vision.

Dance at Luminato 2016

Yes Yes Y’all is a Toronto-based collective working to connect the city’s queer and hip hop communities through large dancehall parties. This video features one of said dance parties.

The Beginning of the End (and Why it Should Happen Again)

By Sky Fairchild-Waller Apocalypsis R. Murray Schafer

Welcome to the beginning of the end, also known as Apocalypsis, R. Murray Schafer’s two-hour oratorio chronicling the demise of the world and its laboured regenesis. The mood, more than fittingly, isn’t a light one; 1000 singers, musicians, and dancers gather to perform the opening and closing ceremonies of this Olympic-sized pageant of death and rebirth, and you made it into the theatre and to your seat, which was was no small feat.

Winners announced at Toronto’s 2015 Dora Mavor Moore Awards

The dance division saw a total of thirty-five nominees in seven categories.

Visionary Programming at Luminato

By Sky Fairchild-Waller

Last week, during the final stretch of one of Toronto’s largest annual festivals, I saw some brilliant things. Sometimes you see art that makes you feel like you’ve never seen art before.
